  • Upstate NY ice fishing season off to a solid start after two bad years in a row

    After two weeks of consistent, sub-freezing temperatures, upstate New York’s ice fishing season is off to a rock-solid start.

    Ice anglers in CNY hit the hard water in droves for the first time last weekend, creating makeshift shanty towns on the region’s most popular lakes and bays, including Cayuga Lake, Sodus Bay, Oneida Lake, and Chaumont Bay.

    Raul Vargas, of Endicott, was among the few diehard anglers who’ve already fished Oneida Lake twice this season, once in December and again last weekend.

    “Winter is finally back, people,” Vargas declared from his shanty on Oneida Lake.

    “Fish on!”

    Worst season in recent memory

    Last year was the worst ice fishing season in recent memory. Jeff Tornabene, co-owner of Lakeside Outfitters in Canastota, remembers having one good weekend of ice fishing on Oneida Lake in 2024.

    That was it.

    Tornabene has one word for it: “Awful.”
